A Foggy Morning on the Beach

The almost constant sun is one of my favorite things about living in L.A.
Sun is something you learn to savor in San Francisco,
where a warm afternoon is a rarity to be treasured.
But here, I never have to worry about spending a sunny day inside at work
because it'll be sunny tomorrow.  Almost certainly.

But once in a while,
a foggy morning is just perfect.
A stroll on the beach path,
coffee in hand,
as the marine layer slowly lifts...
it makes me feel lucky to live here, in this great state.

The Last Day Of Summer

It was Tuesday.

It came and went, but I got to enjoy the WHOLE DAY.  Outside in the sun!

This place sure knows how to charm a girl.

Tuesday

It was 8am when I woke up yesterday morning, although to me it felt like noon.  The summer sun was bursting through the shutters above our bed and the water was already boiling for the French press.  It smelled like eggs.

...Eggs?

Ashleyyyyy, your egg sandwich is ready!!!!

And I was up.

I had an unexpected day off yesterday, which is really the best kind of day off, isn't it?

It started with that egg sandwich, done just the way I (and Joanna) like.  And it ended with citrus-poached salmon (my first time poaching anything!), asparagus with lemon and toasted almonds, and avocado toast.  That's right, I COOKED.  Count it people -- TWO home-cooked meals in one day (two more than I've had in months)!

In between those delicious meals, there was some Olympics watching, pinning, and general internet stalking.  And there was coffee (not in a to-go cup), sipped while lounging on my balcony in the too-early-to-be-this-hot sunshine with a view of the ocean.  Ohh the luxury!

There was also some tramping around town for a bit to do all those things -- the ones you know you should do but you never do because well, you've got better things to do.  I did them all.  And then screamed "I'M FREEEEE!!!" at the top of my lungs while balloons and confetti fell from the sky (in my head).

There was sushi and coconut water for lunch on my roof, with some Elle magazine on the side.  (You know it's been too long since you read a magazine when you start tearing out all the pages "to keep" because everything is "so pretty!")

And then there was book reading, and beach laying on perhaps the most perfect beach day we've had all summer.  I remembered what the ocean sounds like.

And then I had the most lovely glass of rosé with a friend at Shutters.  While it was still light outside!  Imagine that.

The world really did stand still.

Happy International Surf Day!

{yes, that's a thing}

{Half Moon Bay, CA}

I'll be taking some early-morning surf lessons, and eating a delicious food truck egg-breakfast at the Surfrider Foundation event to celebrate!

Also, cool vintage surf photos, and have you seen this documentary?

Life's a Beach (on Saturdays)

I knew I moved to the beach for a reason.  Saturday reminded me why.

Hope you all have a festive Cinco de Mayo!  Have a marg (or 3) for me!

Sunrise on the Beach (in film)

I finally got my film developed from the morning I watched the sunrise on the beach...

For me, film really captures the peacefulness of that morning in a way that my digital (as much as I love it) just couldn't.  These are keeping me calm this Monday morning.

Sunrise at the Beach

Yesterday, I woke up when it was still dark and walked down to the beach with Brian.  While he surfed, I watched the sun rise and the world come to life.  It was perhaps the most beautiful natural display I've ever seen.

I'll have lots more pictures for you on Monday, but for now, here's just one of my faves.

Happy Weekend, friends!

Weekend Win

This weekend was L.A. living at its best.  A crisp and sunny morning run on the beach, a simple and delicious brunch at FarmShop (insta-fave), a wander through the Brentwood Country Mart, and Christmas shopping for all my favorite people made me smile.  And then there was a tree-lighting, a panattone shared with friends, and a healthy dose of wine for a festive Saturday night.

And a new apartment to start off our Sunday.  Oh yes!  We signed a new lease!  For a place with a view!  We're not moving till January, but I already have so many ideas - it's distracting, really.  But this place is awesome, guys.  There's a loft and a roof deck and a fireplace and a balcony and a microwave and a dishwasher!  A DISHWASHER.  You should come visit.  And use all the plates and cups you want.

{why yes, that is the Pacific over there behind those palm trees}

To top it all off, there was an impromptu stop at Shutters on the Beach for some oysters, wine, and an incredible Sunday sunset.

The whole weekend stretched on like a holiday.  A wonderful, wonderful weekend.

I feel it in my fingers...

Our Christmas cards arrived in the mail this week!

We ordered them from SilhouetteBlue on Etsy and I absolutely love them!  I can't wait to send them out and officially start the holiday season!

And speaking of the holidays, there's a holiday festival on Main Street in Santa Monica this weekend (complete with Christmas tree lighting, caroling, and "holiday parties" in all the boutiques!), and I'm so excited to go!  I hope you have a festive weekend, too!
