Friendsgiving

I know we're all over Thanksgiving now and Christmas is all the rage and all that.
But you know, Thanksgiving just went by too fast this year.
It's one of those things where it feels like it happened
yesterday and also 2 years ago all at once...you know how that is.

Well this year, Brian and I started a new Thanksgiving tradition:  Friendsgiving!
It turns out our apartment is exactly long enough
to fit three 6-foot tables end-to-end,
which is all you need to squeeze 20 people in for dinner :)

I got a little overly excited about decorating all harvest-y
and even went to the Flower market downtown the day before.
And I broke out the gold spray paint,
which you should know by now is my #1 secret weapon.
Also, thank goodness for the Dollar Store.

But the best part really was having everyone in one place, together.
It's been hard in LA to get a group together,
and I miss having that sense of cohesion,
so this was just absolutely perfect.
So many people I love, who finally got to meet each other!
The best.

And, I made a turkey for the first time!
Win.

Deborah the turkey.  She was delicious.

Well done, friends, well done.

Valentine's Day

This was our 8th Valentine's Day together, and probably the most stereotypical one to date --
complete with roses, chocolates, wine, and a dinner date.
I usually eschew all of that typical, cliche romance,
but this year, it just kind of happened.

And it was lovely.
Sometimes you just need a cheesy date night, you know?

(Plus, I got to re-wear the Payless heels I bought for Vegas.  Win!)

P.S.  We had dinner at the new Venice restaurant, Barnyard, and it was delicious!  I would highly recommend it!

Jan. 2

After that whole "carpe diem" pep talk yesterday, I have a horrendous cold/flu/demon-virus and all I want to do is sleep for days.

So that's Jan. 2 for you.

I leave you with this picture because Dec. 31 > Jan. 2.

Jan. 1

Here's to a new day, a new year!

As you know, I live for new beginnings.

I crave the freedom of a clean slate; an open door; an unknown ending.

Jan. 1 is only a day, only the first of a month.  But it can be more than just that.  I see it as a break in the chain binding me to December 31, to the 51 days before that, to the past.

Jan. 1 stands alone.

And best of all, Jan. 1 brings with it the opportunity to choose what Jan. 2 should look like.  It's a chance to make everything new again.

This life is yours; this day is yours; this year is yours.

Make it your best ever.

P.S. Jan. 1, 2012.

Christmas Eve 2012

Christmas Eve this year at my parents' house was a rainy, cold day -- all the more fitting to turn on the fire and fill up on mulled wine, sarmale, and boef bourguignon.  We had a lot of people at our house this year -- 21 total for dinner!  A very merry night indeed.

Once the festivities began, I got too distracted by all the friends and family (...and wine) everywhere, and totally forgot to take any pictures, but here's a peek into the pre-party, when tablecloths were still white and my hair was still curled.

And I got the COOLEST gift from Brian:

A real live old-school polaroid camera!  (Apparently I wasn't "lucky" enough to get coal.)  I love it.  I love him.  I love Christmas.

Hope you all had wonderful holidays with your families and friends!

See you in 2013!

P.S.  Christmas last year.  It seems like decades ago!

Fairmont

I've been in SF this week, working from our office up here, and I'm remembering how much I love this city at Christmas.  The ice rink in Union Square steals my heart every time!  And Christmas shopping just feels right when you're in a real city, you know?

One thing I was so happy to be here for this year was our annual friends visit to the Fairmont.  The Fairmont at Christmas just can't be beat.  The tree, the wreaths, the lights!   And the giant gingerbread house!  It's all so festive.  We went for the first time in 2010 (back in law school), and had so much fun that it has become a tradition.

{Brian in 2010 having a little too much fun...also I'm wearing those boots today}

This year was even better because I got to see everyone I've missed so much all at once!  Such a fun way to have a reunion.

Love to all of you for the holidays!

He Said/She Said (Holiday Edition)

Brian:  I got you some presents.

Me:  What kind of presents?  Are they shiny?  Sparkly?  Alcoholic?  At least not coal, right?

Brian:  Coal?  You mean America's most abundant natural resource?

Me:  Uhh...

Brian:  Kids should be so lucky.

Christmas Cards are Here!

Picking out Christmas cards is one of my favorite parts of the year.  I could scroll through etsy pages for days.  Seriously, days.

This year, I ended up finding these at Urbanic and I just couldn't resist!

Let the Christmas festivities begin!

P.S. These were our cards last year.  I still love them!

A Different Home for the Holidays

This Thanksgiving was the first holiday I spent away from my family.  I had avoided the "now that we're married..." holiday talk for as long as possible, but this year I had no choice but to succumb to the splitting plan.

Luckily for us, Christmas isn't really an issue -- my family does a big Christmas Eve feast, and his does the whole Christmas morning thing, so we just fly from SF --> OC early on the 25th.  But Thanksgiving is problematic.  It's only one night, one indivisible meal.  There's no time for a flight, even a short 90-minute one.  And I'm an only child.

Plus, it goes without saying, my family is THE BEST at Thanksgiving (if I do say so myself).

{the fam, Thanksgiving 2011}

Last year was the first time Brian had Thanksgiving with my family. He gladly ate spanikopita in place of green bean casserole, he didn't complain a bit about missing his family (although I'm sure he did), and was happy to be there with mine.

This year, I owed him the same.  But I worried I wouldn't be able to do it.  I worried that I'd complain, or I'd be grumpy or sad or resent him for making me miss out on one of my favorite family days.  I thought about it, read about it, self-analyzed, tried to prep for an emotional meltdown.

And now I can tell you, the truth is it was totally fine.  Better than fine -- it was really really nice.  When we got in the car headed to Santa Barbara, I was just grateful.  Grateful to have Brian by my side, and grateful that I had a new family who was willing to add me to their table, include me in their traditions, and invite me into their holiday.  I realized that it wasn't about me (surprise!).  It was about them.  It was about making sure they knew that I was happy and thankful to have them in my life, and to have them welcome me into theirs.

And so it was a rite of passage of sorts, and it was important that I was there, for them, for me, for us.  A very happy Thanksgiving!  (A couple pictures here if you want to see.)

P.S.  We also started a little mini-Pearson-fam Thanksgiving tradition, just the two of us -- we ran our first turkey trot!  (I know, I know, everyone's doing it these days -- but it was funnnn I swear.)  It was a 4-miler in Santa Barbara, and we've made a pact to do it again next year in the Bay Area, no excuses!

Now that I've eaten my weight in pumpkin pie, it's practically Christmas.

Hi there!  Sorry for the silence.  Life happened.

I've been meaning to show you around our apartment for a while now, but now I feel like I've waited too long and the carpet's dirty.  It's totally dirty.  Sorry.  You're still allowed in though.  Just don't look down.

Anyhoo, I went a little Christmas-crazy on Saturday.  (This relates.)   I don't know what came over me.  I woke up on Saturday in Santa Barbara (where we spent Thanksgiving), and maybe it was my hangover, or maybe it was the 80-degree weather that made me think it's Christmastime. . . . So we drove off down the coast in search of a good tree lot and a Target.

Buying a Christmas tree in L.A. is not cute.  It's not the wintry, nostalgic experience of my childhood when we used to chop down our tree in Half Moon Bay (ok, truth - that only happened like twice, and there was no snow involved obvi, but it was memorable!).  Tree-buying in L.A. is more like rescuing a barely-living plant from a depressing, shade-less parking lot.  So we rescued a tree, named it Earl, and took it home.

The Target experience was more festive to be sure.  And yes, it was frivolous and totally impulse-fueled, but I just couldn't not buy Christmas pillows.  Christmas pillows!!!  And so now is the part where I show you pictures of our living room and the things I put in it.

Here's our apartment pre-Christmasication:

Quite summery, no?

Here's our living room with the first couple holiday touches added in:

{thanks to the best grandparents-in-law for all their extra ornaments!}

I know it's not a lot, but just having a few things around to remind me of Christmas made me smile like an idiot all weekend.  (That also could have been the peppermint martinis. . . .)

The next project:  finding some stockings for our fireplace!

I'm thinking maybe some of these...

Stay tuned!
